Springtime is a fine time to transform, it seems to us. Isn't this the season for renewal? We watch as the bare branches outside burst forth with leaves and blossoms, while perhaps a running maiden is doing the same, her soft breast becoming "wreathed in tender bark"- to quote our favorite classical Roman poet and this season's one true soulmate, Ovid her hair turning to leaves while she eludes the no-good god at her heels. And maybe we too set out to morph into our most badass, ferocious selves... This is the perfect moment for all of it.

And so we've dedicated an entire issue to the act of metamorphosis and to metamorphoses generally. Our springboard (yes, spring-board) is Ovid's gorgeous ancient tome Metamorphoses. Who doesn't love his age-old tales of gods and mortals becoming stones and flowers and stars and berries? "Our version of reality is very personal," Susann Cokal writes in an essay here. "So is the state of transformation that is, in the end, the human condition: It is mystical, beautiful, uncanny, and the most real thing about us."

Let's embrace this state of change. Better yet, let's celebrate it! To that end, we've filled these pages with butterflies and goddesses, abandoned city lots transformed into thriving community gardens, antique textiles reworked into shimmering new beauties, and ordinary objects enchanted into personal talismans.

Most of all, perhaps, this spring is about discovering our own inner wild-i.e., "the untamed parts of ourselves," as Monica Crosson writes, "that society urges us to suppress: intuition, sensuality, hunger, rage, and sacred knowing." Yes to all of that, please.

We hope you enjoy this issue and that it might help nudge you toward the metamorphoses you need, even the ones you didn't know you wanted. And above all, we hope you have a wild, transformative, world-changing spring.
