Greek goddess Persephone is best known as the daughter of Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, and Zeus, king of the gods. She is famously associated with the myth in which she is abducted by Hades and becomes the Queen of the Underworld.
Her time spent in the Underworld and her return to Earth each year explain the changing seasons: when she is with Demeter, the earth flourishes (spring and summer); when she returns to Hades, Demeter mourns, bringing autumn and winter. Persephone symbolizes both life and rebirth, as well as death and the cycle of nature.
