Pythia Statue
Pythia was not a goddess herself, but the high priestess of the Oracle of Delphi, serving as the human intermediary for the god Apollo. She was considered the most authoritative prophetic voice in the ancient Greek world.
The Pythia presided over the sanctuary at Delphi, one of the most sacred religious sites in Greece, believed to be the “navel of the world.” When delivering prophecies, she would enter a ritual trance state, traditionally seated in the inner chamber of Apollo’s temple. Ancient sources describe her as inhaling vapors or engaging in ritual practices that induced altered consciousness, though modern scholars debate the exact mechanism.
